Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 15 | Pitch size: 40x40

  • This rondo breaks a 4-2-4 formation down into 2 specific zones where the possession team will play 6v3. The possession team can switch the ball back and forth freely, and one of the pressing players must transfer across zones once the possession team switches the ball, creating a pressing 3 at all times. The practice transitions into a 5v2 centrally if the pressing team manages to regain possession.

  • • Ball Switching – Encourage the possession team to move the ball quickly from one zone to the other, focusing on accurate and fast switches. The aim is to force the pressing team to work harder to cover the space and transition between zones.

    • Pressing & Transition – The pressing team must be disciplined in transitioning across the zones. As soon as the ball is switched, one defender should quickly move to the new zone to maintain pressure. This requires good communication and movement off the ball.

    • Positioning in Zones – The possession team should look to create space within their zones by stretching the defense and maintaining a high tempo in their passing. Players should be constantly scanning for gaps and be ready to receive the ball.

    • Defender Awareness – The pressing team should always be aware of the ball's position and anticipate where the ball will be switched next. They must stay compact and work as a unit to maintain pressure, preventing the attacking team from progressing easily.

  • Limit Touches

Introduce a restriction on the number of touches (e.g., 1 or 2 touches per player). This will force players to move the ball faster and make quicker decisions, increasing the intensity of the rondo.

Focus: Enhancing quick passing and faster decision-making in tight spaces.

  • Add an Extra Attacker

Add an extra player to the possession team (making it 7v3), which forces the pressing team to adapt and work harder to maintain pressure. The possession team will now have to be more patient and precise with their ball movement to break down the defenders.

Focus: Developing patience in possession and maintaining structure when outnumbered.
