Fiorentina Rondo & Wide Finishing

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: Half Pitch
This semi-opposed practice starts with a central 4v2 rondo. The idea of the practice is for the wider midfielders to make penetrative forward passes into wider players who make runs from out to in. After 5 passes, the 2 wider players in the rondo are allowed to play an unopposed pass into the wider player.
As a progression, allow for the opposite wide player or the deepest player in the rondo to join the attack to allow for a simpler finish, encouraging them to make quick forward runs into the box.
• Penetrative Passing – The wide midfielders should focus on making penetrative, forward passes into the wider players. The quality of these passes should be such that the receiving player is already on the move and can play forward immediately.
• Movement from Wide Players – The wide players must make out-to-in runs to receive the ball. Timing is crucial here, as they need to be in the right position to receive and attack quickly once the pass is made.
• Quick Transitions – After the pass is played into the wide player, they should transition quickly into a position to finish. This requires excellent awareness and the ability to quickly assess the best spot to finish the attack.
• Support Runs – The central players must also make sure to offer support by being ready for any second-phase play. Encouraging players to constantly look for the next movement helps maintain the flow of the practice.
Add Joining Player
Allow the opposite wide player or the deepest player in the rondo to join the attack, adding an additional option for the final pass and encouraging quick forward runs into the box.
Focus: Improving decision-making in attack and encouraging quick, well-timed runs into the box.
Full Opposed Play
Make the rondo fully opposed, with defenders actively pressing the ball. The wide players must now make more decisive movements and quick passes, adding pressure to the finish as the practice becomes more competitive.
Focus: Enhancing attacking play under pressure, improving timing, and precision in both the pass and finish.
