Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 30x15
This drill is designed to enhance players' ability to maintain possession under pressure while incorporating quick transitions and switching of play. The practice begins with a 3v3 setup on one side of the grid, where the attacking team can use two neutrals positioned on the end line and central line to create a numerical advantage. The objective for the possession team is to complete a minimum of three passes on one side of the grid before switching the ball to the opposite side.
Each successful switch of play earns the attacking team a point, encouraging quick ball movement and strategic positioning. The defending team must work hard to regain possession and transition into the attacking phase, challenging their defensive organization and pressing intensity.
• Possession Play: Players must focus on maintaining possession under pressure, using short, quick passes to retain control of the ball. Encourage players to move into space, creating passing lanes and options for the ball carrier.
• Switching Play: When the team successfully makes 3 passes, emphasize the importance of quick and accurate switches to the opposite side. Players should aim to move the ball quickly while maintaining their shape and width on the field.
• Defensive Pressure: The defending team should focus on pressing intelligently, closing down passing lanes, and forcing mistakes. Encourage defenders to work together to regain possession and immediately transition into attack.
• Movement off the Ball: Players should always look for space and angles to receive passes. Encourage off-the-ball movement to support the ball carrier and create more passing options.
Limit Touches:
Limit the number of touches per player (e.g., two-touch play) to increase the speed of play and force players to make quicker decisions.
Focus: Improves decision-making and encourages quicker ball movement under pressure.
