Instructions/Setup:
In this unopposed finishing practice, the focus is on attacking combinations in wide areas, followed by a well-timed attack into the box. Play starts with the attacking team combining in wide areas to break down the defensive structure. After completing the combination, three players— the center forward, the opposite winger, and a midfield runner— make timed runs into the box for a finishing opportunity. The drill is designed to simulate a fast and fluid attacking phase, allowing players to practice their runs and finishing technique.
Once the combination is completed in the wide area, the focus shifts to players attacking the box for a shot on goal. This practice emphasizes timing, teamwork, and movement off the ball, providing a high-intensity, unopposed opportunity to develop finishing in game-like situations.
Coaching Notes:
• Combination Play: Players should focus on quick, precise passes and movement in wide areas to break down the defense. Encourage fluidity in their combinations and awareness of supporting players.
• Attacking Runs: The center forward, winger, and midfield runner must time their runs into the box effectively, making sure to attack different areas to create space and opportunities for a finish.
• Finishing Technique: Players attacking the box must be prepared to finish with composure and precision, focusing on keeping their shots on target and placing the ball in the corners.
• Timing of the Cross: The player delivering the cross should focus on accuracy, aiming to deliver a ball that allows attackers to time their runs and finish effectively.
Progression 1: Add Defenders:
Introduce one or two defenders to apply light pressure, encouraging attackers to make their runs quicker and more decisive while dealing with defensive pressure.
Focus: Increases the intensity of the drill and replicates game-like conditions for attackers.
Progression 2: Vary the Cross:
Change the type of cross being delivered, such as a low cross, high ball, or driven cross, to challenge attackers in different ways and improve their finishing from various types of deliveries.
Focus: Improves adaptability in finishing from different types of crosses.
