Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This two-way finishing drill is designed to develop short combination play and finishing under pressure on a small-sided pitch. Two teams of four players operate simultaneously on opposite sides. One team works on the left side, combining through quick passes and movement before finishing in the top goal, while the other team works on the right side, combining before finishing in the bottom goal.

Each team must complete at least two to three passes between the four players before attempting a finish. After each shot, the ball is played back into the combination to maintain continuous flow and engagement. The drill encourages creativity, awareness of space, and timing in tight attacking areas.

  • • Combination Play: Emphasise sharp, one- or two-touch passing and coordinated movement to break defensive lines and create clear shooting opportunities.

    • Finishing Technique: Reinforce varied finishing techniques, encouraging composure and accuracy under pressure.

    • Timing and Support: Coach players to move into space at the right moment to receive the ball, ensuring support angles and passing options remain open.

    • Awareness: Encourage players to scan the pitch, anticipate teammates’ movements, and adjust positioning dynamically.

  • One-Touch Finishing: Require the final combination pass or shot to be taken first time to increase tempo and technical challenge.

Focus: Improves speed of execution, decision-making, and finishing under realistic match conditions.

  • Add a Passive Defender: Introduce a passive defender to apply light pressure during the combination or finishing phase.

Focus: Develops movement under pressure, spatial awareness, and composure when faced with defensive opposition.
