Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 6 | Pitch size: 30x20
In this drill, play starts with a player attacking an unopposed mini goal. After successfully passing the ball into the mini goal, the player immediately transitions to the opposite side of the grid, where they must defend a 1v1 situation against an attacker. The defender’s objective is to prevent the attacker from scoring, while the attacker works to break down the defense and finish into the mini goal. This continuous flow of attacking and defending transitions is designed to improve both offensive and defensive decision-making under pressure.
The drill focuses on rapid transitions, encouraging players to shift quickly between attacking and defending roles. This helps to develop the ability to recover and adapt to changing situations, enhancing the player’s overall defensive awareness and offensive timing.
• Attacking Focus: Players should focus on being decisive and accurate when attacking the mini goal. The goal is to quickly take advantage of the space and score without hesitation.
• Defensive Transition: Once the player has passed the ball into the mini goal, they must immediately transition into a defensive mindset. Encourage quick reactions and alertness to defend the 1v1 situation.
• 1v1 Defending: The defender should focus on positioning, staying goal-side, and using their body to block the attacker’s path. Quick footwork and decision-making are key to closing down the attacker effectively.
• Constant Movement: Players should maintain high intensity throughout the drill, ensuring a constant flow of transitions. Encourage both attacking and defending players to stay active and alert to the changing situations.
Increase Pressure on Attacker:
Allow the defender to press the attacker earlier, reducing the space and time they have to make decisions. This will force the attacker to act quicker and test their ability to finish under pressure.
Focus: Improves attackers' ability to finish under pressure while developing the defender’s ability to deal with a faster-paced game.
