Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 20 | Pitch size: 50x50
In this dynamic drill, each of the four grids starts with five players and a ball. On the coach’s whistle, one player from each grid must sprint either clockwise or anti-clockwise to create a 4v1 overload scenario in their respective grid. The defender’s goal is to win possession, after which they must sprint back to their original grid. The drill is designed to emphasize quick transitions, pressure on the ball, and the ability to win possession and counter quickly. The grid size and distance between the grids can be adjusted to suit the players’ age, ability, and specific training objectives.
This drill encourages players to work on their defensive and offensive transitions, promoting agility, communication, and teamwork.
• Sprint and Transition: Emphasize the importance of quick decision-making when sprinting into the grid. Players must anticipate where the ball will be played and move quickly to close down the attacker.
• Defensive Pressure: The lone defender must focus on staying goal-side and applying constant pressure. Encourage defenders to use their body to direct the ball away from dangerous areas and work as a unit to win possession.
• Teamwork and Communication: Encourage communication between attackers and defenders to ensure the attacking players work together to maintain possession and the defender applies effective pressure.
• Winning Possession: Once the defender wins possession, they should transition quickly and efficiently back to their grid to reset the drill. Encourage them to sprint hard and focus on maintaining possession.
