Instructions/Setup:

This drill focuses on building possession and creating opportunities to counterattack. The 7 possession-based players are tasked with completing a set number of passes (e.g., 5-10 passes) to earn a point. The defenders are positioned to pressure the possession-based team, and if they win possession, they must transition quickly to counterattack. The counterattack is in a 2v1 scenario. The attacking players are encouraged to exploit this 2v1 situation, while the defenders who lost possession must quickly recover and attempt to regain the ball.

This drill helps improve ball retention, quick transitions, and creating goal-scoring opportunities during a counterattack.

Coaching Notes:

• Ball Retention: Emphasize the importance of quick, sharp passing to maintain possession. The players in possession should look to move the ball quickly, using width and depth to create space and make it difficult for defenders to win possession.

• Counterattacking Focus: Once possession is won, defenders must immediately look to transition to attack. The countering team should exploit the 2v1 situation, focusing on quick, direct passes to break into the attacking area.

• Defensive Pressure: Defenders must be patient and look to anticipate passes. When they win the ball, they should quickly look for opportunities to launch a counterattack before the attacking team can recover their shape.

• Transition Speed: Both teams should focus on the speed of transition—whether it's maintaining possession or countering. Encourage the attacking defenders to exploit the space quickly and efficiently.

Progression 1: Increase Pressure on Possession Team:

Add more defenders to pressure the possession team, making it more difficult to complete passes and increasing the intensity of the drill.

Focus: Forces the possession team to play quicker and more intelligently, while improving defensive transition.

Progression 2: Limit Passes:

Reduce the number of passes required to earn a point. For example, instead of 5 passes, require 3-4 passes to encourage faster decision-making and quicker ball circulation.

Focus: Increases the speed of play and forces the possession team to be more decisive with their passing.
