Instructions/Setup:

This drill starts with a 3v3(+1) rondo on one side of a 10x10 yard grid. The possession-based team aims to make a set number of passes before attempting to switch play to the opposite side. Once the ball is switched, the attacking team must quickly transition into an attacking phase, looking to exploit the space created.

As the ball moves across, the opposition player positioned at the other pole is allowed to make a recovery run, attempting to pressure the attacking team as they advance. This encourages quick passing, intelligent movement, and rapid transitions between possession and attack, helping players improve their decision-making and tactical awareness in high-pressure situations.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Passing: The team in possession should focus on making quick, accurate passes to maintain fluidity. Players must use the extra neutral player effectively to create numerical superiority and move the ball efficiently across the grid.

• Switching Play: Once the required number of passes is achieved, the team should look to switch play quickly to the other side, using the open space to advance the ball. Timing and accuracy of the switch are key.

• Recovery Runs: The opposition player positioned at the other pole must sprint to apply pressure to the attacking team. This teaches attackers to handle pressure and make quicker decisions when the defending team recovers.

• Movement Off the Ball: Off-the-ball movement is critical in this drill. Players should constantly be scanning for passing lanes and making runs to receive the ball in space. Communication is vital to ensure players are always offering options.

Progression 1: Add More Defenders:

Introduce additional defenders on the opposite pole to increase pressure on the attacking team during the switch, forcing quicker play and more dynamic decision-making.

Focus: Enhances attacking players’ ability to perform under pressure and make faster transitions from defense to attack.

Progression 2: Limit Touches:

Limit the number of touches each player can have (e.g., 2-3 touches). This forces players to focus on quick passing and decision-making, encouraging fast and effective play.

Focus: Improves the tempo of the game, encouraging quicker transitions and reducing unnecessary ball retention.
