Instructions/Setup:
This drill begins with a 3v1 rondo where the team in possession aims to complete a set number of passes before transitioning to attack. Once the team has completed the required number of passes, they must attempt to play forward into one of the three mini goals. The two outer mini goals are positioned to replicate midfielders receiving on angles, challenging the attacking team to find creative ways to break down the defense.
The defending team consists of two players positioned outside the rondo grid. Their primary responsibility is to screen and protect the three mini goals, increasing the pressure on the attacking team as they try to build up and make a successful pass into one of the goals.
Coaching Notes:
• Rondo Focus: Encourage quick passing and sharp movement to create space for the team in possession. Players should focus on quick ball circulation and positioning to break the pressure of the 1 defender in the rondo.
• Pressure on Mini Goals: Defenders positioned outside the rondo should always be aware of the ball and anticipate passes toward the mini goals. They must track the attackers' movements and close off any potential scoring opportunities.
• Attacking Progression: Once the set number of passes is completed, players should aim to attack quickly, looking for opportunities to exploit the angles and space in the mini goals. Midfielders should work on timing their runs and positioning to receive the ball in good attacking areas.
• Defensive Awareness: The defending players must stay compact and focused on protecting the mini goals. They should aim to read the play and intercept passes into the goal areas, while also being prepared to press the player in possession to disrupt the build-up.
Progression 1: Increase Defensive Pressure:
Add a second defender inside the rondo to increase the pressure on the attacking team. The additional defender should challenge the possession side to make quicker decisions.
Focus: Improves decision-making and encourages quicker ball movement under pressure.
Progression 2: Add More Mini Goals:
Introduce additional mini goals to increase attacking options. Players can score in any of the mini goals, and defenders must cover multiple potential targets.
Focus: Expands attacking creativity and challenges defenders to cover more space.
