Instructions/Setup:


This finishing drill focuses on combining different types of passes and runs to improve attacking timing and decision-making. Players will work on three key movements: straight runs with diagonal passes, diagonal runs with straight passes, and diagonal runs with diagonal passes. Four poles are set up in a diamond shape to guide the players in visualizing and executing these passes and runs accurately.


The drill requires players to adapt to different attacking scenarios by recognizing which run and pass combination will best break down the defense. Each combination helps players refine their ability to receive and finish in dynamic, real-game situations



Coaching Notes:


• Run Timing: Players should focus on timing their runs to meet the ball in stride. The run must be quick, purposeful, and well-coordinated with the pass. For straight runs with diagonal passes, the attacker should time the run to arrive at the right angle for the pass.


• Pass Accuracy: The passer must focus on delivering accurate and well-weighted passes, particularly when executing diagonal passes. The ball must be played with the correct pace to reach the attacker’s feet or to set up a finish.


• Body Position: Players must ensure they are in the correct body position to receive the ball and finish. When running diagonally, players should adjust their body to receive the pass in a way that makes it easy to finish towards goal.


• Finishing Technique: Emphasize a variety of finishing techniques based on the type of pass received. Whether it’s a driven shot, a chip, or a placed finish, players should adjust to the ball’s trajectory and use the appropriate technique.

Introduce defenders who can apply light pressure to force the attacking player to make quicker decisions on their runs and finishes.
