Instructions/Setup:
This counter-attacking drill focuses on developing quick transitions from deep positions, utilizing the space behind the defensive line. The drill simulates a real match scenario where the attacking team must exploit the space after winning possession. A player will pass into the space behind the defensive line, triggering a 4v2 counter-attack. The attackers must transition rapidly and try to create a scoring opportunity within a 10-second time limit.
The drill promotes quick thinking, pace, and decision-making, all while emphasizing the importance of exploiting spaces behind defenders during counter-attacks. The time limit creates a sense of urgency, pushing the attackers to move quickly and make decisive choices.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Transition: Emphasize the need for players to transition quickly from defense to attack. As soon as possession is gained, they must look to move the ball forward swiftly into the space behind the defensive line.
• Exploiting Space: The attackers should focus on running into the available space behind the defense, timing their runs to stay onside and creating depth for better passing options.
• Accuracy of Pass: The player passing into the space should aim for accuracy, ensuring the ball is played into an area that gives the attacking team a clear advantage. The ball should allow attackers to run onto it at speed.
• Defenders’ Positioning: Defenders must quickly recover and adjust their positioning to block the space. They should look to force attackers wide or slow down the counter by closing down the space.
Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure:
Introduce an additional defender who starts from behind the counter-attacking team, forcing the attackers to think even more quickly and find space in tighter areas.
Focus: Encourages quicker decision-making and enhances the attackers' ability to finish or create chances under pressure.
Progression 2: Increase Time Limit:
Increase the time limit from 10 seconds to 15 seconds, allowing attackers a bit more time to make decisions and increase their options in the final third.
Focus: Provides attackers more time to evaluate options and make better decisions while still maintaining the urgency of the drill.
