Instructions/Setup:

This drill is designed to focus on the technical skills of receiving and passing forward, which is essential for maintaining possession and progressing the ball up the field. The drill involves four teams working within a grid that is split into 16 different zones. Each team will be assigned to a vertical line, with one player positioned in each horizontal zone. Players will pass the ball forward into the next player, aiming to progress the ball vertically through the grid. This encourages a fast and direct style of passing, helping players develop the ability to make forward passes under pressure.

The setup allows players to work on their passing accuracy, receiving under pressure, and making quick decisions to progress the ball forward. The grid structure also creates a controlled environment to reinforce the concept of moving the ball quickly from one zone to the next, maintaining fluidity in possession.

Coaching Notes:

• Passing Forward: Players should focus on making accurate forward passes, aiming to progress the ball through the grid as quickly as possible. Encourage players to play passes with pace to allow the receiver to continue the movement.

• Receiving Under Pressure: Emphasize the importance of receiving the ball in a way that prepares the player to immediately play forward. Encourage players to open their body and scan for options before receiving the pass.

• Movement off the Ball: Encourage off-the-ball movement to create passing lanes for the player with the ball. Players should make runs into open space, ensuring they are available for a forward pass.

• Decision-Making: Players must make quick decisions on whether to pass forward or hold the ball. Encourage the habit of always looking for the most progressive pass available.

Progression 1: Increase Speed of Play:

Reduce the amount of time players have to make a pass after receiving the ball. This can be done by introducing a time limit or increasing the pressure from defenders.

Focus: Enhances players' ability to make quick decisions and pass under pressure, improving speed of play.

Progression 2: Add Defenders:

Introduce a defender to each vertical line, forcing players to think more about the timing and placement of their passes, ensuring they are playing into space and not directly into the defender's area.

Focus: Encourages players to use their vision and creativity to pass into space and avoid pressure.
