Instructions/Setup:
This rondo drill is designed to develop players' understanding of positional rotations and how to maintain possession while dynamically moving within the grid. A 4v2 is played out on each side of the grid, where the central player is not fixed and can rotate in or out of the grid based on the set rotational pattern. The objective is to keep possession while constantly moving and adjusting positions, ensuring that players are always available for a pass and aware of the space around them. The central player’s role is to add flexibility to the rondo, forcing players to adjust their positioning and movement in response to the ball.
By incorporating rotation into this drill, players will improve their ability to recognize space, change positions on the field, and maintain fluidity in possession. This encourages adaptability and helps players understand how to create overloads and maintain control during dynamic game situations.
Coaching Notes:
• Positional Awareness: Players must always be aware of their position in relation to the ball and their teammates. Emphasize the importance of maintaining balance in the grid, with players spread out to create space for passing.
• Rotational Movement: The central player should rotate in and out of the grid based on the established pattern. Players on the outside should adjust their positions accordingly to maintain possession and create passing options.
• Pass and Move: Encourage players to play one-touch or two-touch passes and immediately move into new positions. This keeps the drill moving at a high tempo and ensures that players are always active and engaged.
• Pressing and Covering: Defenders must work together to apply pressure while also covering the passing lanes. The attacking team should focus on quick ball movement and constant rotation to break the defensive pressure.
Progression 1: Add a Time Limit for Possession:
Introduce a time limit, such as 30 seconds, for the team in possession to maintain control. This will encourage quicker decision-making and more fluid rotations.
Focus: Improves decision-making under time pressure and reinforces the importance of quick ball movement.
Progression 2: Introduce More Defenders:
Add an additional defender to the grid, making it a 4v3 or 4v4. This forces the attacking team to be more creative with their rotations and passing to break down the increased defensive pressure.
Focus: Develops the ability to maintain possession and execute rotations under increased pressure.
