Instructions/Setup:
This 1v1 finishing drill takes place inside the penalty box with two full-sized goals, one placed on the edge of the area to create a mini pitch. The drill involves 4 players positioned outside the grid, each with a ball. The attacker must use quick movements, sharp cuts, and good communication to create separation from the defender, allowing them to receive a pass and take a shot on goal. The defender’s task is to stay alert and prevent the attacker from getting a shot off, while the attacker has the added challenge of having two goals to aim for, making the decision-making process more dynamic.
The players outside the grid feed the balls into the attacker, forcing them to time their movements and decisions carefully. The defender needs to stay focused and position themselves well to block potential shots on both goals. This drill helps develop finishing under pressure, quick decision-making, and the ability to work in tight spaces.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Movement and Separation: Emphasize the importance of the attacker using quick, deceptive movements to create separation from the defender. Encourage attackers to change direction rapidly and use their body to shield the ball.
• Effective Communication: Encourage constant verbal communication between the attacker and the players outside the grid who are serving the balls. This helps with timing and positioning, allowing the attacker to anticipate and prepare for the pass.
• Defender Awareness: The defender must stay alert and anticipate the attacker’s moves. They should focus on positioning themselves to cut off shooting angles and force the attacker into less dangerous areas of the box.
• Shooting Decision: The attacker must make quick decisions about which goal to aim for, depending on the defender's positioning. Encourage attackers to focus on accuracy over power when finishing.
Progression 1: Change of Angle:
Adjust the positioning of the players outside the grid so they serve balls from different angles. This forces the attacker to adjust their positioning and make decisions based on varying types of service.
Focus: Improves the attacker’s ability to finish from different angles and under varying pressures from the defender.
Progression 2: Add a Time Limit:
Introduce a time limit (e.g., 10 seconds) within which the attacker must receive a pass and take a shot. This increases the intensity and challenges the attacker to make decisions more quickly.
Focus: Develops the ability to make quick decisions and finish under time pressure.
