Instructions/Setup:

This cross and finishing drill is designed to improve your team's ability to finish from close range. The drill is split into two phases. In Phase 1, the attacking players make their run into the box, with a cross coming from one side. The attackers aim to finish from close range into the goal. After completing the first phase, the attackers quickly turn around and switch direction to attack the opposite goal. In Phase 2, a cross comes from the opposite side, and the attackers again look to finish from close range.

The key to this drill is the quick transition between the two phases, ensuring attackers are ready to adjust and finish from both sides of the box. This helps players develop the ability to react quickly to crosses, improving their finishing skills and awareness of space around the goal.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of the Run: Encourage attackers to time their runs well to meet the cross at the optimal moment. Players should be encouraged to attack the ball with pace and be ready to strike as soon as the cross comes in.

• Finishing Under Pressure: Emphasize the importance of finishing under pressure from defenders. Attackers should focus on keeping their shots on target, aiming for placement over power, especially when finishing from close range.

• Quick Transition: After completing a finish, attackers should quickly turn and get ready to attack the opposite goal. This helps improve their ability to quickly recover and stay alert during the transition between phases.

• Crossing Quality: Encourage the players providing the crosses to deliver accurate and varied balls, ensuring the attackers are presented with different types of crosses (high, low, driven, or floated).

Progression 1: Add a Defender:

Introduce a defender in each phase to apply pressure on the attacking player. This forces the attacker to be more aware of their positioning and decision-making when receiving the ball.

Focus: Enhances finishing under pressure and improves decision-making when facing defenders in the box.

Progression 2: First-Time Finishing:

Encourage players to attempt first-time finishes whenever possible. This adds a layer of difficulty and simulates real-match scenarios where the ball may come quickly and require a first-time strike.

Focus: Develops the ability to finish quickly and efficiently, reducing the time spent adjusting for the shot.
