Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 40x30
Play starts with a 2+GK v1 build-up where the team in possession aims to progress the ball through to any of the 3 forward players positioned further up the pitch. The build-up team must focus on quick, controlled passing and creating angles to break the defensive lines, while the goalkeeper supports the build-up play.
Once the ball reaches one of the 3 forward players, the next phase begins: a 3v2 attacking scenario. The attackers must then work to break down the two defenders and create a scoring opportunity. Throughout this drill, there are various moments of transition that simulate realistic counter-attacking situations.
If the single defender in the build-up phase wins possession, they immediately initiate a counter-attack. During the 3v2 phase, if the two defenders regain possession, they have the opportunity to counter by passing the ball forward to the three attackers on the opposite side and continuing with a 3v2 attack.
• Build-Up Quality: The attacking team must focus on sharp, accurate passing and maintaining good spacing to progress the ball effectively through the lines. The goalkeeper plays a key role in supporting this build-up.
• Movement off the Ball: Forward players should make dynamic runs to create space and angles for the ball carrier, enabling better passing options. Timing and communication are essential in breaking the defensive lines.
• Defensive Pressure: Defenders must stay compact and work together to delay the attacking team. In the 3v2 phase, defenders should focus on narrowing down options for the attackers and force them into less dangerous positions.
• Counter Attack Awareness: Once possession is won, all players should immediately transition to a counter-attacking mindset. The team regaining possession must look to exploit space quickly, while the attackers must support the counter with well-timed runs.
Add Extra Attacker:
Introduce a fourth attacker to the initial 3v2 phase, turning it into a 4v2 attack. This progression provides more attacking options and helps develop team play in numerical superiority situations.
Focus: Enhances decision-making and teamwork in high-pressure situations, increasing the challenge for defenders and providing attackers with more opportunities to finish.
Add a Time Limit:
Set a time limit of 10-15 seconds for each phase of play (build-up, attack, and counter). This forces the attacking team to move quickly and make decisions under pressure while encouraging the defending team to respond swiftly when they win possession.
Focus: Increases the tempo of the drill, helping players improve their speed of thought and execution in both attacking and defensive transitions.
