Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 20x40

  • This 7v4 rondo focuses on improving possession retention and the ability to counter-press immediately after losing the ball. The attacking team of seven players must work together to maintain possession, looking for opportunities to break through the defensive lines of the four defenders. If the defending team wins possession, they must quickly transition and attempt to move the ball into one of the end zones to score.

Each end zone is approximately 10 meters long and has two mini goals placed at the end. The attacking team can counter-press to prevent a goal by quickly recovering possession. The defenders must work to transition quickly and accurately, while the possession team must stay alert and organized to ensure they can regain control before the ball crosses into the scoring zone.

  • • Possession Control: The team in possession should focus on maintaining control with quick, short passes and effective movement off the ball. They must be patient but also look for opportunities to penetrate through the defending players.

    • Counter Pressing: As soon as possession is lost, the players in possession should immediately counter-press, applying pressure to the ball carrier to prevent an easy transition into the end zone. This requires excellent fitness, awareness, and communication.

    • Defender Transitions: Defenders should look to exploit space in the end zones quickly but must stay aware of the counter-press, as the original possession team will be looking to regain the ball.

    • End Zone Focus: The defending team should work on quick transitions into the end zones, aiming to score within a set time frame. The key to success here is decision-making – whether to take on a shot quickly or to pass to a better-placed teammate.

  • Restrict Time in End Zones:

Limit the time the defending team can spend in the end zone to 5-7 seconds. This forces the attackers to counter-press quickly and regain possession before the defenders have a chance to fully set up a goal-scoring opportunity.

Focus: Encourages urgency in both counter-pressing and attacking, improving decision-making under pressure.
