Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This practice is organised across four small possession grids, each containing one locked-in defender. The attacking team has eight players who are free to move between grids, enabling them to create a 3v1 numerical advantage in any zone. Play begins with the attacking team circulating the ball, looking to combine quickly and transfer possession from one grid to another while maintaining control.

The aim for the attackers is to recognise where overloads can be created, move efficiently to support the ball, and use fast combinations to break out of pressure. If a defender wins possession, they immediately transition to attack and can score in any of the four mini goals positioned around the outside. This keeps all players alert to defensive pressing triggers and attacking transitions.

  • • Create Overloads: Encourage attackers to move early and form 3v1 situations, giving the ball-carrier clear angles and passing options.

    • Switching Play: Reinforce quick recognition of where the space is—players should scan across all grids and transfer the ball away from pressure when possible.

    • One- and Two-Touch Rhythm: Highlight the need for fast circulation, crisp passing, and purposeful movement to maintain tempo and shift defenders.

    • Support Positions: Coach players to adopt clever supporting angles around the ball to keep possession secure while maintaining forward transfer options.

  • Set Pass Targets Before Transferring:
Require the attackers to complete a designated number of passes (for example, 3–5) within a grid before they are allowed to transfer the ball into another area. This increases discipline, scanning, and patience during the build-up phase.

Focus: Improves controlled possession, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure.

  • Allow Two Defenders Per Grid:
Permit defenders to leave their original zones and join another grid, turning moments into potential 3v2 situations. This raises the intensity and forces attackers to move the ball even quicker while recognising pressure cues.

Focus: Develops speed of circulation, spatial awareness, and the ability to retain overloads under increased defensive pressure.
