Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 40x50
This attacking practice is played across two consecutive zones, creating a double 3v2 scenario. The attacking team consists of two attackers supported by one neutral player, giving them a consistent overload of three. The task begins in the first area, the build zone, where the attackers must combine to beat two defenders using movement, sharp passing, or dribbling to progress into the second zone.
Once they successfully enter the attacking zone, the attackers immediately face another pair of defenders in a second 3v2 situation. Here they must find a way to create space, isolate a defender, and finish the attack with quality. The structure encourages fluid combinations, clever support play, and the ability to break defensive lines across multiple phases of play.
• Attacking Combinations: Encourage the attackers to use quick give-and-go movements, third-man runs, and set passes to break the defensive line in both zones.
• Off-Ball Movement: Highlight supporting runs that pull defenders away, create passing lanes, and open space for the next action.
• Dribbling to Commit Defenders: Coach the ball-carrier to drive at defenders with purpose, drawing pressure to create clear 2v1 moments for teammates.
• Timing of Forward Play: Emphasise patience when needed but explosive forward movement once space is created to maintain the numerical advantage.
Add a Time Limit to Finish the Attack:
Introduce a 6–8 second limit for the attackers to progress through both zones and attempt a finish. This encourages quicker ball circulation, faster movements off the ball, and more game-realistic tempo.
Focus: Speeds up decision-making and improves attacking urgency.
Defenders Can Recover Between Zones:
Allow one defender from the build zone to recover into the attacking zone once the ball transitions forward. This creates moments of temporary equality or overloaded defence, forcing attackers to read pressure and adapt.
Focus: Develops realism in transitions and improves the attackers' ability to create advantages even when defensive numbers change.
