Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
This unopposed finishing practice is designed for two centre forwards working through four consecutive finishing phases. The first two phases begin centrally, with each attacker running onto a pass, taking one controlled touch between the mannequins to guide the ball into the box, and then finishing on goal. This focuses heavily on the quality, direction and weight of the first touch while reinforcing composure when entering the penalty area.
The next two phases come from wide areas, with crosses delivered from both the left and right sides. The attackers must time their movements effectively, adjust their body shape, and attack the cross with intent. All four finishing actions flow continuously, creating a high volume of repetitions and helping players refine their timing, coordination and end product.
• Timing of Runs: Emphasise coordinated movement so attackers arrive onto the pass or cross at the right moment rather than being static or arriving too early.
• First Touch Quality: Reinforce taking the touch into space and between mannequins to set up the finish cleanly and keep the action fluid.
• Body Shape and Composure: Coach forwards to open their body, stay balanced, and choose the correct finish when entering the penalty area.
• Attacking the Cross: Encourage aggressive movement, attacking the correct zones, and adjusting steps to meet the ball cleanly.
Add a Passive Defender on the Crosses:
Introduce one passive defender inside the box during the crossing phases. Their role is to add light pressure, occupy space, and force the attackers to make smarter movements to find finishing angles.
Focus: Improves movement timing, scanning, and finishing under mild defensive interference.
Add a Finishing Time Constraint:
Set a 3–4 second limit from the moment the attacker receives the ball or the cross is delivered to finish the action. This replicates match tempo and increases the demand on first-touch quality and quick decision-making.
Focus: Enhances speed of execution, sharpness in front of goal, and realistic finishing behaviours.
