Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x20

  • This practice combines an overloaded attacking phase with an immediate defensive transition. Play begins with a 2+1v2 scenario, where two attackers supported by a neutral player create a 3v2 advantage. Their objective is to combine quickly and finish into one of the mini goals, focusing on sharp movement, fast circulation and decisive end product.

Once the attacking phase ends—either through a goal, save, or turnover—the two attackers must instantly transition to the opposite side of the grid. There, they become defenders and face a fresh 2+1v2 overload against two attackers and one neutral player. This shift demands fast recovery, awareness and the ability to reset defensively under pressure. The practice creates continuous repetitions of attack, transition and defend.

  • • Attacking Movement and Rotation: Encourage attackers to create width, depth and angles, using the neutral player for quick combinations and third-man runs.

    • Speed of Attack: Highlight the importance of moving the ball quickly to exploit the overload before defenders can delay or recover.

    • Transition Mindset: Coach players to react instantly once the first phase ends—sprint into defensive positions and organise quickly.

    • Defensive Engagement: Emphasise delaying the attack, cutting central options and working together to force predictable actions.

  • Add a Time Limit to Score:
Introduce a 5–6 second limit for the overloaded team to finish their attack. This raises the intensity and encourages faster combinations, sharper movement and more decisive actions.

Focus: Improves attacking urgency and clinical decision-making.
