Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 40x50

  • This practice is designed to link possession, progression and end product. Play begins in the first zone with a 4v2 possession scenario. The attacking team must retain the ball under pressure while looking for the right moment to progress play through a central player positioned between the zones.

Once the ball is played forward into the attacking zone, the practice becomes live against two defenders and a goalkeeper, where the attackers must combine quickly and attempt to finish the attack. The transition between zones encourages players to recognise when to secure possession and when to play forward with purpose.

To increase challenge and control tempo, the possession team in the first zone can be required to complete a set number of passes before progressing the ball into the attacking phase.

  • • Central Player Awareness: Encourage the central player to constantly scan, adjust their body shape and receive on the half-turn.

    • Timing of Progression: Reinforce patience in possession followed by decisive forward play when the opportunity presents itself.

    • Speed of Attack: Once the ball enters the attacking zone, emphasise quick combinations and direct movement to exploit the defence.

    • Finishing Detail: Coach composure in front of goal, selecting the correct finish based on defensive pressure and goalkeeper positioning.

  • Minimum Pass Requirement in Zone One:
Set a target number of passes (e.g. 5–8) before the ball can be played into the attacking zone.

Focus: Encourages ball retention, movement off the ball and controlled build-up.

  • Add a Recovering Defender:
Allow one defender from the first zone to recover into the attacking zone after the ball is progressed.

Focus: Increases realism, challenges attacking decision-making and encourages faster execution.
