Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 10 | Pitch size: 30x30

  • This drill focuses on developing attacking players' ability to combine through natural overlapping runs against a single defender. Two attackers start with the ball and work together to create passing angles and overlaps to penetrate the defense. The defender must stay alert, communicate, and position themselves effectively to block passing lanes, delay the attackers, and prevent them from scoring into the main goal.

The attackers practice timing their overlapping runs and quick combination play to outsmart the defender. Meanwhile, the defender improves one-on-one defending, decision-making, and anticipation under pressure. This drill promotes teamwork, spatial awareness, and sharp attacking movements in a realistic 2v1 scenario.

  • • Encourage attackers to time overlapping runs precisely to create clear passing options – This coordination helps disrupt defensive positioning and open scoring chances.

    • Stress quick, accurate passing between attackers to maintain attacking momentum and pressure – Sharp ball movement forces the defender into difficult decision-making.

    • Remind the defender to stay goal-side and anticipate overlaps early – Positioning and reading the attackers’ intentions are crucial to cutting off passes and delaying attacks.

    • Emphasize communication between both attackers to exploit space and create scoring opportunities – Vocal teamwork maximizes effectiveness and prevents defensive recovery.

  • Defender Starts Closer

Have the defender start closer to the attackers to increase defensive pressure and force quicker attacking decisions.

Focus: Improve attackers’ speed of combination and defender’s reaction time in tighter spaces.

  • Add Time Limit

Set a time limit for attackers to score to encourage faster attacking play and composure under pressure.

Focus: Develop attackers’ quick decision-making and finishing ability in high-pressure situations.
