Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 25x25

  • This drill focuses on improving players’ understanding and execution of 3rd man passing combinations to create attacking opportunities. Players work in groups of three, positioned in a triangular shape, where the ball is passed between two players before being played into the third player who makes a timed run into space. The drill encourages sharp timing, awareness of teammates’ movement, and quick, accurate passing to break defensive lines effectively.

Players rotate roles regularly, practicing playing both the initial passes and the decisive 3rd man pass. This activation emphasizes communication, anticipation, and precise ball control, helping players develop fluid attacking patterns in game situations.

  • • Encourage players to communicate clearly and call for the ball early – This improves timing and ensures smooth, coordinated passing sequences throughout the drill.

    • Focus on sharp, accurate passes with the correct weight and pace – Proper passing technique allows the third player to receive and move forward efficiently without breaking stride.

    • Emphasize the importance of timing runs into space for the 3rd man – Well-timed movement creates space and options, breaking down defensive lines effectively during attacks.

    • Reinforce quick decision-making under moderate pressure – Developing mental sharpness helps players adapt quickly to changing scenarios and maintain flow.

  • Increase Pace and Complexity

Speed up the passing tempo and add an additional player to the combination, creating more complex passing angles and movement requirements.

Focus: Develop faster decision-making, sharper technical execution, and better spatial awareness under increased complexity.
