Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This unopposed finishing drill focuses on movement, combination play, and crossing. The pattern begins with a central dummy receiver who checks short, lets the ball run past, then spins to receive a set pass from the next supporting player. After controlling the set pass, they immediately play it wide to a winger who has timed their run. The winger drives forward and delivers a cross into the box for two onrushing attackers to finish.

The sequence flows continuously with players rotating roles, encouraging fluid movement and rhythm. This drill enhances timing, finishing technique, and coordination between central and wide players in attacking scenarios.

  • • Focus on the dummy receiver's movement and timing – Sharp changes of direction create realistic match-day separation from defenders and disrupt defensive lines.

    • Emphasize accuracy and weight of the set pass – The pass must allow the receiver to play forward quickly, staying composed under pressure when executing.

    • Encourage wingers to deliver early, driven crosses – Low or whipped deliveries increase finishing opportunities and simulate realistic match tempo and final-third urgency.

    • Urge attackers to time their runs across defenders – Arriving in sync with the cross helps with clean contact and goal-scoring chances in crowded penalty areas.

  • Add a Passive Defender in the Box

Introduce a passive defender to increase awareness and movement from attackers during the finishing phase.

Focus: Improve attackers' timing, positioning, and adjustment to defensive presence while still maintaining finishing quality under tighter pressure.

  • Vary the Cross Type and Delivery Area

Wingers must deliver different types of crosses (cutbacks, early inswingers, or deep far-post balls), challenging attackers to adapt.

Focus: Develop versatility in attacking runs and finishing techniques based on the type and angle of delivery received from different zones.
