Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 1 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch
This 1-to-1 finishing drill is designed to sharpen a player’s movement, finishing variety, and composure in and around the penalty area. The player completes four finishes by collecting a ball from four different positions along the edge of the box. After each finish, they must sprint toward the centre circle, where the coach plays a pass for a first-time finish into a mini goal—replicating a realistic set-pass scenario under fatigue and movement.
• Time the Approach and Finish With Precision – Adjust stride and body shape when approaching each ball to strike with balance and clean contact.
• Stay Mentally Sharp Between Phases of the Drill – Quickly refocus after each action to execute the next with clarity and purpose.
• Adjust Foot Position When Finishing From Different Angles – Use varied finishing techniques to match the position of the ball and your body.
• Attack the Ball Early for Set-Pass Finishes – Anticipate the coach’s pass and meet the ball in stride for a clean first-time strike.
Add Pressure With Time Constraints
Introduce a countdown or stopwatch to complete all four finishes within a set time frame to increase urgency and decision speed.
Focus:
Improves efficiency, movement quality, and composure under game-like time pressure.
Vary the Type of Set Pass From Coach
Mix driven, lofted, and bouncing passes for the mini goal finishes to challenge first-time technique and reaction timing.
Focus:
Develops adaptability, first-touch decision-making, and quick foot preparation under pressure.
