Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This dynamic SAQ and reactions drill is designed to enhance explosive movement, quick directional changes, and sharp reaction timing. Players begin standing opposite a coach or server. On a visual or verbal signal, they must react instantly by working quickly over a set of mini hurdles placed in front of them, focusing on light, rapid footwork.

After clearing the hurdles, players immediately burst into a short sprint zone, where two cones force them to make two sharp changes of direction. The drill finishes with a final 5–10m sprint to complete the movement pattern before jogging back to reset. This is repeated at high intensity in short bursts.

  • • Emphasize sharp reactions to the initial signal – Players must stay focused and alert, reacting instantly to replicate unpredictable match scenarios.

    • Promote light, fast feet over the hurdles – Keep knees low and posture upright to maximize foot speed, control, and coordination across all steps.

    • Focus on posture and body shape through turns – Players should stay low with tight foot placement to support clean, explosive changes of direction efficiently.

    • Encourage a powerful final sprint phase – Sprinting technique should stay strong after fatigue, with arms driving and head forward through the finish.

  • Add a Ball Carry After Final Sprint

After the final change of direction, players collect a ball and dribble quickly into a designated target zone to finish.

Focus: Improve transitional speed while introducing control under fatigue and pressure, simulating quick attacking transitions in match situations.

  • Add a Reactive Directional Cue at First Cone

The coach points left or right after the hurdles, dictating the player's first change of direction off the sprint.

Focus: Sharpen cognitive processing, reaction speed, and agility by forcing spontaneous movement decisions after initial footwork activation.
