Hoffenheim Switch & Finish
ADDED TO FAVOURITES

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch
This switch and finish practice focuses on developing central combinations, quick changes of play and attacking movement inside the penalty area. Play begins with a combination in central areas, where players work together to create the angle and opportunity for a diagonal switch of play. The emphasis during this phase is on clean passing, timing and recognising the correct moment to move the ball into wide areas.
As the switch is played, two attackers who were involved in the central combination immediately make aggressive runs into the box. The wide player receives the diagonal pass and delivers a cross into the penalty area, where the two attackers attempt to finish unopposed. The practice encourages coordinated movement, quality delivery and effective finishing from crosses following a switch of play.
• Quality of the Switch Pass:
Encourage accurate, well-weighted diagonal passes that travel with speed and allow the winger to attack immediately.
• Timing of Attacking Runs:
Reinforce attackers delaying initially before accelerating into the box to arrive at the correct moment.
• Crossing Detail and Delivery:
Coach wide players to assess movement in the box and deliver crosses with appropriate pace and accuracy.
• Movement After the Combination:
Emphasise players transitioning quickly from combination play into attacking runs without slowing the overall attack.
Alternate Crossing Types:
Require the wide player to vary deliveries between driven, lofted and cutback-style crosses during repetitions.
Focus:
Develops crossing versatility, attacking adaptability and improved understanding of different finishing situations inside the box.
