Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 50x65

  • This unopposed practice focuses on playing out from the back in a structured, fluid manner. 11 players are positioned on the pitch, with the goalkeeper remaining fixed in their position. The practice starts with the goalkeeper playing the ball to the defenders, who then work through a variety of build-up patterns, progressing the ball up the field towards the forwards. Once the ball reaches the forwards, the team circulates the ball back down the other side, returning to the goalkeeper.

Players are encouraged to follow every pass, constantly moving and shifting the formation to support the ball. This helps develop a full-team understanding of building possession from the back to the attacking third, emphasizing movement, spacing, and fluidity.

  • • Ball Movement: Players should focus on quick, accurate passing with minimal touches. The aim is to keep the ball flowing up the field, using short and long passes effectively to create space.

    • Player Movement: After each pass, players must move to support the ball, providing options to maintain possession and facilitate the next pass. Constant movement is key for breaking defensive lines.

    • Building from the Back: Defenders and midfielders should work on playing through tight spaces and finding angles to progress the ball forward. This includes making quick passes to feet and anticipating where the ball will go next.

    • Role of the Goalkeeper: The goalkeeper plays a key role in the build-up, distributing the ball with precision to set up attacks. The goalkeeper must communicate with the team to ensure smooth transitions from defense to attack.

  • Add Pressure:

Introduce light, semi-opposed pressure from a few defenders at key stages (e.g., after the ball is played to the midfielders). This will challenge players to deal with the pressure and test their ability to maintain possession while progressing up the field.

Focus: Encourages players to improve decision-making and ball control under pressure, making the drill more game-realistic.
