Instructions/Setup:

This small-sided game is designed to encourage building up through the central zone and exploiting the half spaces on either side of the field. The pitch is divided into three zones: a large central zone and two narrow channels on either side, replicating the half spaces. Teams are set up to play a 5v5 game, with the objective of progressing the ball centrally into the two mini goals located on their side of the grid, which are positioned in the half-space channels. Each side has two mini goals, creating multiple attacking options.

The focus of the game is to use the central area for ball progression and then exploit the half spaces to create scoring opportunities. This practice helps improve attacking play in tight spaces, encouraging creativity and awareness of positioning in the final third.

Coaching Notes:

• Building Up Play: Players should focus on playing out from the back, using the central zone to maintain possession and create passing lanes. Encouraging good movement off the ball is key to progress the ball through the midfield and into the attacking zones.

• Exploiting the Half Spaces: The half-space channels should be used effectively to create overloads and open up passing lanes for the forwards. Players need to be aware of these spaces and look to receive and play passes into them to advance the attack.

• Decision-Making: Encourage players to make quick decisions in the final third, either playing a through ball or crossing into the mini goals in the half-space channels. Quick and accurate passing is essential to break down the defense.

• Defensive Shape: Defenders should focus on cutting off passing lanes into the half-space channels and be aware of the attackers' positioning. They should force the opposition to play wide or make difficult passes through the central zone.

Progression 1: Restrict Passes:

Limit the number of passes a team can make in the central zone before they must play into one of the half-space channels. This encourages quicker play and the need to transition the ball into the final third more efficiently.

Focus: This progression emphasizes faster transitions and maintaining attacking pressure.

Progression 2: Add a Neutral Player:

Introduce a neutral player in one of the half-space channels who always plays for the attacking team. This player can help maintain possession and create an overload in the attacking half, encouraging better use of the space.

Focus: This progression allows teams to focus on using the half-space more effectively and creating overloads to break through the defense.
