Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 1 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This individual mastery drill focuses on improving dribbling, change of direction speed, and forward passing. The player begins with the ball and the coach (or a second player) will call out a color. The player with the ball must then travel vertically up the grid, weaving around every cone of the selected color. The drill is designed to enhance dribbling skills and the ability to make quick directional changes while maintaining control of the ball.

As the player approaches the final cone, they will be required to pass the ball forward to a target or to a designated player, promoting the connection between individual dribbling and game-related passing.

  • • Dribbling Technique: Emphasize using the correct foot for dribbling, with close ball control. Players should use both feet and keep the ball under control while weaving around the cones, ensuring that they are not rushing but maintaining effective dribbling speed.

    • Change of Direction: Focus on quick, sharp changes of direction when approaching each cone. Encourage players to make quick cuts and accelerate immediately after each turn to improve their speed and agility.

    • Forward Passing: After completing the dribbling portion, the player should transition smoothly into a forward pass, maintaining good passing technique. Players should focus on the timing of their pass and the accuracy of the delivery, ideally aiming for a target or player in motion.

    • Awareness and Focus: As players move through the drill, they should stay alert and focused on the coach's calls, responding quickly and efficiently to changes in direction.

  • Introduce a Defender:

Introduce a defender to challenge the player’s dribbling. The defender's task is to prevent the player from reaching the final cone. The player must still complete the drill, now having to beat the defender with changes of direction or quick acceleration.

Focus: This progression helps improve players' ability to maintain control while under pressure, and to make decisions quickly when facing a defender.

  • Vary the Passing Target:

Change the passing target after the dribbling portion. Instead of a single target, have multiple passing options available. This forces the player to scan the field and make a more tactical decision about where to pass after completing the dribble.

Focus: This progression develops decision-making and situational awareness when transitioning from dribbling to passing.
