Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 20x20

  • This possession-based drill encourages players to recognize and execute penetrative passes under pressure. The setup involves 6 attacking players aiming to retain possession while being pressed by 3 defenders. A central triangle is marked out within the grid, and the team in possession is rewarded with a point every time they successfully play a pass through the triangle.

The defenders are incentivized to win possession and are rewarded with 3 points if they can score into any of the 4 mini goals located at the corners of the grid. This dual scoring system motivates both the attackers to break lines and the defenders to transition quickly.

  • • Encourage Split Passes: Players should actively look for opportunities to split defenders with passes through the central triangle. Emphasize body positioning and passing angles to break lines effectively.

    • Support Behind the Ball: Ensure supporting players are positioned intelligently to recycle possession if forward options are closed off. Movement off the ball is key to creating new passing lanes.

    • High Tempo Play: Encourage quick, sharp ball movement to create disorganization in the defending team. One- and two-touch play can help maintain rhythm and speed of play.

    • Defensive Transitions: Defenders must react quickly upon winning possession. They should immediately look to exploit disorganization and score into the mini goals within a few seconds.

  • Limit Touches:

Reduce the number of touches allowed for the team in possession (e.g., max 2-touch). This increases the tempo of play and forces quicker decision-making under pressure.

Focus: Enhances speed of play and forces players to think one step ahead when receiving the ball.

  • Add a Neutral Player:

Introduce a neutral player inside or outside the triangle who always plays with the team in possession. This adds an extra outlet and encourages better use of overloads and switching play.

Focus: Helps players recognize when and how to use numerical advantages to penetrate the defensive block.
