Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 7 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This 2v1 attacking drill begins with an attacker playing a forward, line-breaking diagonal pass into a teammate positioned higher up the pitch. After making the pass, the first attacker makes a supporting forward run to join the receiver, instantly creating a 2v1 scenario. The pair then look to combine quickly and attack the goal at speed.

The objective is to exploit the temporary overload and finish the attack by using intelligent movement, quick decision-making, and sharp execution. The defender starts deeper and must react quickly to recover and delay the attack, adding a game-realistic transition element to the exercise.

  • • Emphasise Quality and Weight of Diagonal Pass – The first pass must break a line and arrive with enough pace and direction to set up the attacking movement properly and give the receiver time.

    • Encourage Early Recognition of Overload Options – Players must quickly read the situation to decide between passing, dribbling, or combining to maximize the advantage and create a high-quality chance.

    • Stress Timing and Angle of Supporting Run – The initial passer must time their run perfectly and choose a clever supporting angle to maintain the 2v1 advantage and keep the defender guessing.

    • Promote Speed and Purpose in Final Third Attacks – The combination and finish should be carried out with tempo, accuracy, and minimal touches to replicate game-like transitional moments and fast attacking play.

  • Defender Starts Closer to Receiver

Adjust the starting position of the defender so they are positioned closer to the second attacker, increasing pressure on the pass and forcing quicker decisions from the attacking pair.

Focus: Develops decision-making speed, sharpness in movement, and ability to play under tighter conditions that mirror match-day pressure more accurately.

  • Add a Recovering Defender from Behind

Introduce a trailing defender who begins behind the attacker who plays the diagonal pass and recovers after the pass is played, creating a 2v2 under pressure as the attack develops.

Focus: Trains attacking players to execute fast combinations while under pressure and helps improve awareness of recovering defenders in dynamic attacking transitions.
