Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 9 | Pitch size: 1/2 Pitch

  • This drill focuses on finishing from crosses delivered into the box originating from the half-space. The winger initiates the move by driving aggressively down the line, drawing defenders and creating space. After reaching the byline, the winger cuts the ball back with a controlled pass to a deeper player—typically the full back—who is positioned to quickly deliver a first-time cross into the penalty area. Two attackers make coordinated runs into the box, aiming to finish unopposed with clinical precision.

The drill emphasizes timing, accurate crossing, and sharp movement inside the box, allowing attackers to practice finishing with minimal pressure but realistic attacking patterns. It also develops understanding between wide players and full backs in creating goal-scoring opportunities from wide and half-space areas.

  • • Encourage Controlled, Penetrative Runs by the Winger – The winger should drive with pace but maintain close ball control to effectively draw defenders and create crossing opportunities.

    • Stress Crisp, First-Time Crossing by the Full Back – The full back must deliver accurate, well-weighted crosses early to catch defenders off guard and provide quality service for attackers.

    • Promote Coordinated and Timed Runs from Attackers – Attackers need to time their movement perfectly to meet the cross in dangerous areas with confident, composed finishes.

    • Focus on Composure and Variety in Finishing Techniques – Even unopposed, attackers should practice different finishing methods—volleys, headers, and first-time shots—to build adaptability in game scenarios.

  • Add a Passive Defender in the Box

Introduce a defender shadowing the attackers to simulate pressure but without active contesting, encouraging attackers to improve decision-making and composure under mild pressure.

Focus: Enhances attackers’ ability to find space and adjust finishing techniques with light defensive presence.

  • Limit Time for Cross and Finish

Set a time limit between the winger’s cutback and the attackers’ finish, encouraging quicker decision-making and execution.

Focus: Develops players’ speed of play and sharpness in attacking phases, simulating fast-paced match conditions.
