Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch

  • This practice begins with a 4+3v4 possession rondo split across two adjacent grids. Each grid becomes a 4v2 scenario, with one of the three neutral players operating along the centre line and supporting possession in both zones. The focus in the rondo phase is on quick combinations, movement off the ball, and switching play through the neutral line player.

Once the team in possession completes a set number of passes (e.g. 6–8), they are allowed to play a forward pass out of the rondo grid, penetrating beyond mannequins that represent a defensive line. An attacker makes a forward run to receive and finish unopposed on goal. If the four defenders win the ball during the rondo phase, they immediately switch roles with the other team of four players.

  • • Reinforce Quick, Sharp Passing in Tight Spaces – Players must move the ball with speed and precision to maintain possession and manipulate the defenders’ shape to create openings.

    • Encourage Supportive Positioning from Neutral Players – The +3 players should constantly adjust their angles to offer passing options and help the ball travel across zones efficiently.

    • Emphasise the Timing of Penetration Beyond the Grid – The final pass and run must be well-timed to exploit space behind the mannequins and create a realistic chance on goal.

    • Promote Smooth Transition from Rondo to Attack – Once the target number of passes is completed, players should be alert and proactive in shifting mindset from possession to penetration and finishing.

  • Add Passive Pressure on the Finisher

Introduce a passive defender in the finishing zone who tracks the attacker to simulate light pressure and force quicker decision-making during the finish.

Focus: Enhances composure and shot selection under moderate pressure while maintaining the unopposed finishing structure of the drill.

  • Restrict Time Between Pass Completion and Final Ball

Once the required number of passes is hit, players have a 3-second window to play the penetrating pass and make the attacking run.

Focus: Builds urgency and reaction speed following a successful rondo phase, mimicking moments where time and space to exploit the final third are limited.
