Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 60x30

  • This small-sided game is played as a 5v5 within a central grid, where players aim to dominate possession and work to break the defensive structure of the opposing team. On each end of the grid are four mannequins positioned across a line, creating narrow gates into a final zone. Beyond each line of mannequins is a goalkeeper and a full-sized goal.

The aim is for teams to play through or around their opponents, using clever movement and sharp passing to penetrate past the mannequins. Once a successful pass is played through the mannequins, one attacker can run through unopposed into the final zone and finish past the goalkeeper.

  • • Encourage Patience in Possession with Forward Intent – Players must circulate the ball intelligently while always looking for a moment to exploit space behind the mannequins and break lines effectively.

    • Emphasise Timing and Weight of Penetrative Passes – The through ball must be perfectly timed and well-weighted to meet the runner in stride and avoid interception or a loss of momentum.

    • Promote Constant Scanning and Off-Ball Movement – Encourage players to check shoulders, adjust body shape, and make blindside runs to create passing lanes that allow penetration.

    • Reinforce Sharp, Composed Finishing Under Minimal Pressure – Once in the finishing zone, the attacker should remain composed and focus on clean technique to beat the goalkeeper confidently.

  • Add a Recovering Defender in the Final Zone

After a successful penetrating pass, allow one defender to recover and enter the final zone to apply late pressure to the attacker during the unopposed finish phase.

Focus: Encourages quicker decision-making and calm finishing under pressure while rewarding well-timed passes and movement in the build-up phase.

  • Limit Time on the Ball After Penetration

Once an attacker enters the finishing zone, they have a 3-second time limit to shoot, encouraging rapid execution once behind the defensive line.

Focus: Develops instinctive finishing, improves efficiency in front of goal, and mimics game-like moments where time and space are limited after penetrating passes.
