Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 60x40

  • This small-sided game is designed to develop high pressing tactics. The pitch is divided with two lines on either side, creating a pressing zone. Teams must press aggressively in this area to regain possession.

When a team wins possession inside the pressing zone and scores, they are awarded double goals. This drill challenges players to assess the risk-reward of pressing high and teaches them when it is most effective, balancing risk with timing.

  • • Pressing Zone Awareness: Encourage players to recognize when to engage in high pressing within the designated zone. They should apply pressure quickly to force turnovers, but also understand when it’s best to hold back and avoid unnecessary risks.

    • Communication: Clear communication is vital for coordinating the press. Players should constantly call out for support, making sure the press is synchronized and organized to close down space efficiently.

    • Defensive Transition: When possession is regained, emphasize quick transitions from defense to attack. Players should look to exploit the open spaces created by the press, aiming to capitalize on counter-attacking opportunities.

    • Timing the Press: Teach players to judge the correct timing for engaging in high pressing. They should aim to trap opponents in the pressing zone and force mistakes, but be cautious not to press too early and leave gaps in defense.

  • Add a Counter-Attack Option:

Allow the defending team to play out to a designated counter-attacking area, where they can score a goal. This creates a balance between pressing high and being aware of counter-attacks.

Focus: This progression encourages players to focus on the risk-reward factor, as they need to press high while considering the possibility of a counter-attack when they lose possession.

  • Introduce a Goalkeeper in the Pressing Zone:

Introduce a goalkeeper to the pressing zone. When possession is won in the pressing zone, the team must now finish with a shot on target, facing the goalkeeper.

Focus: This progression sharpens finishing under pressure, combining the high pressing strategy with the added challenge of finishing against a goalkeeper under fast transition conditions.
