Instructions/Setup:
This possession practice encourages players to maintain and move possession while being overloaded. The setup involves 5 players in possession, with 5 bounce players positioned strategically – 4 in the corners and 1 at the center of the grid. The drill focuses on building quick, effective ball movement with support from extra players.
The bounce players act as extra options, allowing the possession team to create a 10v5 when in possession. To increase the intensity and speed up play, the bounce players can be limited to a set number of touches, forcing the team to make quicker decisions and keep the tempo high.
Coaching Notes:
• Movement and Support: Players in possession should constantly look for options from the bounce players. Encourage them to move dynamically to create passing lanes, supporting each other for effective ball movement.
• Quick Passing: Emphasize the importance of quick, accurate passes to maintain tempo. The bounce players must deliver fast, one-touch passes to maintain possession while avoiding defensive pressure.
• Decision Making: Players must make quick decisions based on the pressure and positioning of defenders. Encourage players to scan the field before receiving the ball, allowing them to make quicker decisions when in possession.
• Communication: Communication is key in a possession-based practice. Encourage players to talk and signal to each other, especially when coordinating with the bounce players for effective support.
Progression 1: Touch Limit on Bounce Players:
Introduce a touch limit for the bounce players (e.g., 1-2 touches per player). This forces the possession team to play quicker and create space to receive the ball.
Focus: This progression encourages quicker ball circulation and decision-making under pressure, improving the pace of play.
