Instructions/Setup:
In this 1v1 drill, players will start by racing around two poles, which helps to develop agility and speed. The player starting on the left side of the grid races around the poles before receiving a pass from the byline, with the objective of finishing on goal.
As soon as the shot is taken, the player must quickly turn and transition to defend. The player starting on the right side of the grid will then sprint to receive a pass from outside the area, initiating a 1v1 scenario in which they will attempt to score against the transitioning defender.
Coaching Notes:
• Speed and Agility: Encourage players to focus on quick, explosive movement as they race around the poles. They should aim to generate speed with each turn, preparing themselves to receive the pass and take the shot on goal immediately.
• Finishing Under Pressure: Players should focus on making quick, composed finishes under pressure. Whether it’s a driven shot or a controlled placement, the aim is to be efficient with the first touch and finish decisively.
• Quick Transition: Emphasize the importance of transitioning quickly from attack to defense. After taking the shot, players need to react fast and adjust their positioning to prepare for the 1v1 defending situation.
• Defending 1v1: Defenders should focus on closing down the attacker’s space while staying on their toes. Encourage defenders to remain balanced and control the distance between them and the attacker to force them into a less advantageous position.
Progression 1: Add a Second Defender:
Introduce a second defender into the 1v1 scenario. This will force the attacker to make quicker decisions, either by passing or moving the ball to a better position, and challenge the defenders to work together to contain the attacking player.
Focus: This progression will develop teamwork in defense while also improving the attacker’s decision-making under pressure.
Progression 2: Limit Touches for Attackers:
Limit the attacking player to a set number of touches (e.g., 1 or 2 touches). This will help speed up the play, forcing the attacker to make quicker decisions on their dribbling and shooting.
Focus: This progression enhances the ability to make fast decisions and improves technical skills under time constraints, encouraging players to be more effective in tight situations.
