Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 10x20

  • This build-up drill encourages two midfield players to find space or quickly combine in order to progress play forward into either of the two mini goals located within their grid. The drill starts with two deeper players positioned on the baseline, who are completely unopposed but may be limited to a specific amount of time in possession to maintain tempo and urgency in the build-up phase.

The main objective is for the midfielders to link up and move the ball efficiently, while the defending players try to disrupt the play and win possession. If the attacking team fails to score or the defending team wins possession, play switches to the opposite side of the grid, with the new team in possession attempting to build up into the mini goals on their side.

  • • Finding Space and Quick Combinations: Encourage the midfield players to actively move off the ball, creating options for the player in possession. They should focus on using short, quick passes to break the lines and move the ball forward, while maintaining an awareness of the space around them to exploit openings.

    • Time and Decision Making: The deeper players need to make decisions quickly, especially with a limited time in possession. They should focus on keeping the ball moving and making decisive passes into the midfielders, who can either dribble or pass forward toward the mini goals.

    • Progressing Play: Players should work on progressing the ball quickly, focusing on building attacks and recognizing the best moments to pass forward into space or take on defenders. Timing and awareness of the defensive positioning is essential for a successful build-up.

    • Defensive Pressure: The defending players should focus on pressuring the attacking team without over-committing, ensuring they can intercept passes or force errors. They should work on closing down passing lanes and forcing the attacking team into making rushed decisions.

  • Limit Time for Possession:

Limit the amount of time the two baseline players have in possession (e.g., 5 seconds) to increase the intensity of the build-up. This forces the players to move the ball quicker, creating a more dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Focus: This progression encourages faster decision-making, sharper passing, and more dynamic movements to ensure the ball is advanced before the time limit expires.
