Instructions/Setup:

This small-sided game encourages attacking players to make runs in behind central defenders to create goal-scoring opportunities. The game is structured with two central defenders who are locked onto the line, meaning they cannot leave their designated area. The defending team’s role is to intercept any forward passes played into the space behind the central defenders.

Attacking players are tasked with making runs into the space behind the defenders. If they successfully receive a pass into the space, they are presented with a clear chance to finish on goal unopposed. This practice helps improve timing of runs, passing accuracy, and finishing under minimal pressure.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of Runs: Encourage attackers to time their runs well, ensuring they stay onside and break through at the right moment. The key is to make the run as soon as the pass is played, taking advantage of the space behind the central defenders.

• Passing Accuracy: The player delivering the pass should focus on accuracy and weight, ensuring it reaches the attacker in stride without being intercepted by the defenders. Passing into space with precision will increase the chances of a successful finish.

• Attacking Awareness: Attackers should stay aware of the space behind the defenders, constantly looking for opportunities to make runs that create goal-scoring chances. Communication between attackers and passers is key to ensuring that the correct timing is maintained.

• Defensive Discipline: The central defenders must stay disciplined, ensuring they cover the space and anticipate forward passes. They should be quick to react, using positioning to block off potential runs and prevent attackers from getting a clear shot at goal.

Progression 1: Limit Number of Touches:

Limit each player to a maximum number of touches (e.g., 2 or 3 touches). This forces attackers to play quickly, making sharp runs and quick passes to exploit the space behind the defenders.

Focus: This progression encourages quick ball movement and enhances the speed of play, simulating game situations where attacking players need to act quickly in front of goal.
