Instructions/Setup:

This drill starts with two players completing a set number of passes to each other. Once the set number of passes has been completed, the attacker will turn through one of two gates and attempt to go through on goal. The defender's role is to immediately react by sprinting through the opposite gate and recovering to prevent the attacker from scoring.

The focus of this practice is to simulate quick transitions from attack to defense, improving both attacking timing and defensive recovery. Players must work on decision-making, quick reactions, and maintaining pressure throughout the play.

Coaching Notes:

• Pass and Move: Emphasize the importance of accurate passing and moving after the pass. Attackers should focus on creating space and timing their turn through the gate. The player passing the ball should ensure it’s in a position that allows for a smooth transition to goal.

• Defensive Reaction: The defender must react quickly, sprinting through the opposite gate immediately after the attacker turns. They should focus on closing the space effectively while maintaining a strong defensive stance to prevent the shot.

• Attacking Timing: The attacker must make a quick decision about which gate to go through, using their body positioning to protect the ball and accelerate towards goal. Timing is key to ensuring they get through the gate before the defender can recover.

• Defensive Awareness: The defender must read the attacker’s movements, staying alert to their change of direction. Recovery speed and positioning are essential for preventing the attacker from getting a clean shot at goal.

Progression 1: Add a Second Defender:

Introduce a second defender who starts in a position further away from the play. Once the attacker makes their move, the second defender can join the action, increasing the defensive pressure.

Focus: This progression encourages attackers to make quicker decisions while adding complexity to the defensive recovery, testing both their attacking and defensive skills under increased pressure.

Progression 2: Limit the Attacker’s Touches:

Limit the attacker to a maximum of 2 touches before attempting to go through the gate and shoot. This forces the attacker to be quicker in their decision-making and transition.

Focus: This progression enhances the speed of play, encouraging faster reactions from both the attacker and defender while maintaining intensity throughout the drill.
