Instructions/Setup:

This drill starts with a 3v2 in the central area, simulating an attacking overload in and around the penalty box. Once the initial 3v2 phase is completed, 2 of the defending players transition into the wider zones to defend a 1v1 against the attacking player with a mini goal positioned for them to defend. The remaining attacking player can now engage in an underloaded 1v2 in the central area, providing an additional challenge.

The focus is on both attacking and defensive transitions, with players needing to quickly adjust to the changing dynamics of the game. This practice is great for improving defensive recovery and attacking decision-making in dynamic situations.

Coaching Notes:

• Attacking Decision Making: Encourage attackers to make quick, decisive choices, utilizing overloads and exploiting gaps in the defense. Players should focus on creative combinations to break down the defense and make the most of their numerical advantage.

• Defensive Transition: Defenders must react quickly once the 3v2 phase ends and transition to the wide areas to defend a 1v1. The focus is on recovery speed, closing down the attacker, and making sure they maintain defensive shape and positioning.

• 1v2 in Central Areas: The remaining attacking player in the central area must make quick decisions, deciding when to take on the defender or make a pass to create an opportunity for a shot on goal. Encourage creativity and awareness of the space.

• Wide Zone Defending: The defenders transitioning into the wide areas must focus on staying compact and maintaining defensive discipline when under 1v1 pressure. They should aim to force the attacker wide and prevent them from taking a direct shot on goal.

Progression 1: Add a Neutral Player:

Introduce a neutral player in the wide zone who can assist the attacking team. This gives the attackers more options to exploit and puts more pressure on the defenders to manage their transitions.

Focus: This progression encourages the attackers to think quickly and adjust to the additional support in the wide areas while testing the defenders' ability to handle a numerical disadvantage.
