Leicester Counter Attack SSG

Instructions/Setup:

This small sided game is designed to promote explosive counter attacking moments by manipulating space and team shape. A unique rule requires all players to be inside the opposition half before a team is allowed to score, encouraging advanced positioning and forward movement.

This condition leaves space in behind, creating natural counter attacking chances for the out-of-possession team. If they regain the ball, they can immediately exploit the open half with pace. Goals scored on the counter do not require all players to be in the opposition half.

Coaching Notes:

• Space Exploitation: Encourage attackers to recognise and exploit large gaps left in behind by a fully committed team. Look for quick, early passes into space or long carries.

• Commitment to Press: Teams trying to score must press with intensity and keep shape high up the pitch — but must be wary of overcommitting and being exposed.

• Decision Making in Transition: Players must quickly assess whether to drive, pass, or shoot on the counter. Encourage intelligent runs and support play to increase options.

• Game Awareness: This setup helps players think about game management — when to press, when to drop, and how to control tempo depending on score or time left.

Progression 1: Add a Time Limit to Score:

Once all players are in the attacking half, teams must score within 10 seconds. This pushes urgency and forces quick decision-making in the final third.

Focus: Encourages fast interplay and movement once possession is established high up the pitch.

Progression 2: Counter Bonus for 3-Pass Goals:

Award a bonus point if a counter attack results in a goal after just 3 or fewer passes. This adds value to quick, vertical transitions.

Focus: Emphasises direct play and clinical execution under pressure during counters.
