Leicester Penetrating Patterns

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 40x40
This technical passing drill focuses on developing penetration and timing when playing through a midfield block. Four mannequins are set up to represent a compact midfield line. The practice begins with a square pass played across the face of the block, followed by a well-timed penetrative pass through the mannequins to a wide receiver on the opposite side.
Once received, the ball is circulated back through the opposite side using the same pattern — square pass across, followed by a penetrating pass through the midfield block to the other flank. This continuous rotation encourages rhythm and precision in breaking lines.
• Timing of the Pass: Ensure players wait for the right moment to play through the block — when the receiver is moving and the lane is open.
• Body Positioning: Receivers should be on the half-turn and open to receive the ball in stride, encouraging a fluid transition into the next action.
• Weight & Angle: Focus on the accuracy and weight of both square and penetrating passes, ensuring the ball travels cleanly through tight channels.
• Communication & Scanning: Players must constantly scan the block and communicate with teammates to time their runs and support movements.
Add One-Touch Limit on Penetrative Pass:
Players must play the penetrating pass first-time once the square pass is received.
Focus: Improves anticipation, scanning, and speed of execution when breaking lines.
Add Passive Pressure Behind the Block:
Introduce passive defenders or moving mannequins behind the block to simulate real opposition pressing.
Focus: Trains players to be aware of pressure after breaking the line and make quick decisions upon receiving.
