Instructions/Setup:
This positional rondo allows teams to develop key aspects of modern play — possession retention, penetration through central areas, and pressing upon transition. Five players look to keep possession against three active pressing defenders, while two additional defenders are locked in position to screen the central line and block any through balls.
Once the team in possession completes ‘x’ number of passes, they are permitted to transfer the ball across the central line. If the pressing team wins possession, their immediate objective is to counter and score into one of the mini goals while the original possession team applies an aggressive counter press.
Coaching Notes:
• Create Angles & Passing Lanes: Players must constantly adjust their positions to support the ball carrier. Movement should help break lines and open up passing options quickly under pressure.
• Play with Purpose: Encourage players to scan before receiving and take minimal touches. The goal is purposeful possession — playing forward or across with intent, not just keeping the ball.
• Screen the Line Effectively: Defenders on the central line should remain active and alert. Emphasize good positioning to cut off split passes and read play before it develops.
• React to Transitions Quickly: If possession is lost, the team must immediately press with urgency and communication. Winning the ball back within seconds should be the goal in transition moments.
Progression 1: Add a Neutral Player Inside the Grid:
Introduce one neutral player in the central zone to help create overloads and increase the tempo of play. This encourages quick combinations and creative play to split defenders.
Focus: Promotes finding the free man in tight spaces and improves penetration under pressure.
Progression 2: Limit Possession Time to Transfer:
Once the possession team completes ‘x’ passes, they must transfer within a 5-second window. This adds urgency and forces quicker decision-making when switching play.
Focus: Sharpens execution and encourages rapid play when changing the point of attack.
