Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 11 | Pitch size: 30x20
This drill begins with a 4v1 rondo in an extremely tight 3x3 yard space, focusing on close control and fast decision-making under pressure. Once the single defender wins the ball and knocks it out of the rondo area, the practice immediately transitions into a 7v4 possession game across a larger space, involving the original 5 rondo players plus 2 goalkeepers as neutral support.
The 4 defenders, now acting as a pressing unit, aim to regain possession and counter quickly into either of the mini goals. This drill combines technical precision with transitional reactions and quick thinking.
• Quick Play in Tight Spaces: In the rondo, players must use one or two touches and keep their body open to play quickly under extreme pressure.
• Sharp Transition Awareness: Players must instantly recognize the shift from rondo to possession phase. Movement off the ball and shape adjustment are critical to retain control.
• Defensive Unit Communication: The 4 defenders must coordinate their press, close down passing angles, and hunt the ball together during the possession phase.
• Fast Counter Execution: Upon winning the ball, defenders should look forward immediately and counter with purpose, aiming to exploit the moment of imbalance.
Restrict Goalkeepers to 1-Touch Play:
Allow goalkeepers only one touch to increase tempo and encourage better movement and quicker decision-making by possession players around them.
Focus: Promotes sharper thinking and movement to support quicker circulation from deeper areas.
