Instructions/Setup:
This small-sided game focuses on improving central defenders' ability to make forward passes under pressure. Play begins with a 3v2 in the defensive zone, where the 2 defending players must work under pressure to find an attacking player with a forward pass. The defenders must scan for options and make quick decisions while facing pressure from the attackers.
If the defenders manage to find a forward pass, a 4v2 attack will unfold in the attacking zone, giving the attacking team a numerical advantage to create goal-scoring opportunities. The defenders' success in building from the back will be measured by their ability to progress the ball effectively and make the correct decisions under pressure.
If the 2 pressing players win possession from the defenders, they will quickly counter-attack with the aim of scoring. The goalkeeper is restricted from playing a direct pass to the attackers; instead, the ball must be played out by one of the 2 defenders, ensuring the defenders have to be involved in the build-up.
Coaching Notes:
• Pressure Management: Defenders must remain calm under pressure and prioritize making accurate, forward passes. Encourage them to scan for attacking options before receiving the ball and to communicate with teammates to create passing lanes.
• Forward Pass Decisions: Central defenders should focus on playing penetrating passes to the attackers when possible. They should not hesitate to break the first line of defense and play directly into the attacking players to progress the play.
• Building Under Pressure: The defenders should aim to move the ball quickly and efficiently to avoid being closed down by the pressing players. Encouraging movement off the ball and creating space for the pass will help facilitate a successful build-up.
• Counter-Attack Awareness: When possession is lost, the defenders need to be alert and transition quickly to stop the counter-attack. The pressers should use their speed and positioning to exploit the defensive transition and capitalize on the turnover.
Progression 1: Include More Pressing Players:
Introduce a third pressing player, making it a 3v2 situation for the defenders. This adds a layer of difficulty and forces the defenders to be more precise with their passing and movement under pressure.
Focus: Develops the defenders' ability to deal with increased pressure and improves their composure when faced with more pressing opponents.
