Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 12 | Pitch size: 40x30

  • This positional rondo involves 3 teams of 4 players, with 2 teams working together in possession while the third team acts as the defending group. The aim of the practice is for the possession team to maintain control of the ball by utilizing 2 pivot players, who will act as key links to facilitate quick, accurate passes. These pivots will help the possession teams shift the ball across the grid while looking for opportunities to penetrate the defensive block.

The defending team, on the other hand, must focus on preventing any penetrative passes into the attacking team’s final third. Their objective is to intercept or block any forward passes and win possession as quickly as possible. This practice simulates game-like scenarios where players need to think about both maintaining possession and working under pressure from the defenders.

  • • Use of Pivot Players: Encourage the possession players to maintain a high level of support for the pivot players. These pivots should be constantly moving, offering themselves for the ball and maintaining balance in possession.

    • Awareness of Defenders: The attacking players should be aware of the defending team’s positioning and the pressure they are applying. They need to work quickly to open passing lanes and avoid getting trapped by the defenders.

    • Defensive Shape: The defending team must maintain good compactness and focus on blocking passing lanes into the central areas. The defenders should press as a unit, not allowing the pivot players to turn or play penetrative passes.

    • Quick Transitions: If the defenders win possession, they should look to quickly transition into attack. Players should be ready to exploit any space left by the possession team as they recover to stop the ball.

  • Limit Touches for Possession Team:

Limit the number of touches each player can take (e.g., 2 or 3 touches). This will increase the tempo of the practice and force the possession players to make quicker decisions under pressure.

Focus: Develops quick decision-making and sharp passing to maintain possession under limited touch restrictions.
